General Description:
Authorized on January 16th, 1969 by way of Executive Order 11448 (EO11448). The award is given in lieu of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious non-combat service. Ribbon is largely maroon in color with a pair of think white stripes set slightly inboard of the ribbon's edges.

The Meritorious Service Medal may be awarded to any member of the armed forces of the United States who distinguishes themselves by either outstanding achievement or meritorious service to the United States.
