General Description:
Established by General George Washington in 1782 who went on to serve as America's first president. The ribbon is largely purple with thin white stripes at both edges.


Award Criteria (as Officially Detailed by the United States Armed Services):
"The Purple Heart is awarded for wounds or death as result of an act of any opposing armed force, as a result of an international terrorist attack or as a result of military operations while serving as part of a peacekeeping force."
