Established on May 1st, 172 by Queen Elizabeth II and awarded that same year for the first time on July 20th. Medal is largely dark red in coloring with a pair of thick blue bands inboard of the edges.


Award Criteria (as detailed by various official sources):
Awarded for "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril".
